While helping me put together the other handmade holiday gifts, my son decided he wanted to make some cocoa mix for his friends at school. There are plain recipes mixes out there but they weren’t near as festive as this one (or as pretty!). This was actually fairly expensive to make considering but the smile on his face at doing these almost entirely by himself was worth the extra cost.
Triple Chocolate Peppermint Hot Cocoa
1/2 cup powdered milk
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup mini chocolate chips
1/4 cup andes peppermint candy baking bits or crushed candy canes
1/4 cup mini marshmallows
Layer the ingredients, in the order shown, in a pint-sized jar. Stuff enough marshmallows in the top to keep the mix from moving around.
To Serve: Mix contents well in a large bowl. For each serving, place 1/3 cup cocoa mix in a mug. Add 8oz of boiling water, stir well.
Ingredient Note: We used both baking chips and candy canes. The baking chips will probably melt better but the candy canes were prettier in the jar. Regarding powdered milk – most powdered milk is nonfat which you can certainly use but for better, fuller flavor use full fat milk. In can be found in the Hispanic food section marketed under “Nido” Brand and is easily found at even my rural local Walmart
